PSHE

Personal Social Health Education
Intent

At Scargill it is our intent that our pupils will acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – both now and in the future.  It is our aim that our PSHE Education will develop the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We believe PSHE is such an important part of children's education as we hope their learning will underpin all that they do in school.

Here are some of the things children in Scargill have said about PSHE:

"We learn special things to keep us calm. It helps us when we feel worried." Year 1 Pupil

"I like it because there is no right or wrong answers. We just get to share our feelings" Year 2 Pupil

"It's all about your mental and physical health and we learn how to look after both" Year 3 Pupil

"I feel like we can dive deeper and get to know each other better" Year 4 Pupil

"It teaches me how to be a good leader, work with others and make friends" Year 5 Pupil

"PSHE helps get me ready for Secondary School." Year 6 Pupil

Implementation

We teach PSHE through the Jigsaw Programme, which is a whole-school approach. This covers all areas of PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.

The Jigsaw approach embodies a positive philosophy, creative teaching and learning activities to nurture children’s development as compassionate and well-rounded human beings as well as building their capacity to learn through Relationships and Health Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development.

Impact

When children leave Scargill we want our children to have the confidence to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural challenges that are part of growing up. They will be able to do this by becoming respectful, inclusive, healthy and active members of society. Our children will have respect for themselves and others through positive relationships with peers and a sense of self worth.
