A message from our Chair

On behalf of the Governing Body I would like to welcome you to the Scargill Family.

Scargill has a long history, dating back to 1662, when the Reverend John Scargill, Rector of St Wilfrid's Church, left an endowment in his will to fund a school. The school was opened in 1664 for 12 boys and today Scargill Church of England Primary School is an Academy, part of the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust. We are justifiably proud of our links with St Wilfrid's Church and the additional perspective that gives us in providing a well-rounded education for our children.

As Governors, we are responsible for the safety, welfare and education of our children. Our purpose is to ensure that a high quality of education is being provided in a safe and nurturing environment. Governors are appointed to ensure a clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; to hold the executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; to oversee the finances of the school and make sure its money is well spent. We would like to add a fourth function to those three core strategic functions, which is  to listen to stakeholders e.g. parents and thus have a broader accountability.

The Governors are united by a commitment to the school and a shared responsibility for the school's long term success. We work very closely with the Executive Head, Head of School, Senior Leadership Team and Staff, supporting them in their commitment to providing Scargill's children with the best possible education, spiritual well-being, key social and creative skills, confidence and self esteem, to help further their personal development. We want every one of our children to have access to an ambitious, broad and deep curriculum and to all the opportunities that they deserve; to demonstrate excellent conduct, ethos and performance. We would like our Scargill citizens to show that they are Hardworking, Determined, Generous, Good sports, Creative, Kind, Welcoming, Respectful, Forgiving and Adventurous.

We are Governors because “We were all children once. And we all share the desire for the well-being of our children, which has always been, and will continue to be, the most universally cherished aspiration of humankind.” (Kofi Annan)
